Update 2: Strike Continues

Writer's picture: Local 00048Local 00048

The PSAC-UTE bargaining team returned to the bargaining table with the CRA today at 1:30pm. We do not have a tentative collective agreement, as such we will continue tomorrow for day 3 of the general strike. Here are a few updates.

Strike Pay

Strike pay will be issued weekly, on Fridays, beginning May 1, 2023 via e-transfer. If you have not signed up for e-transfers, you can do so on the picket line. If you do not sign up for e-transfers, payments will be issued by cheque.

Top Up

UTE national does not provide a top to the $75/day (tax-free) that PSAC provides and our local does not have a strike fund. Our executive council will attempt to bring an item at our upcoming Annual General Meeting to retroactively address this. When the date for the meeting is announced we encourage all members to attend.

Religious Holiday(s)

Happy Eid Al-Fitr to our Muslim members. Muslims around the world mark the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan during this period. Members observing Eid would be able to get their $75 daily strike payment without spending four hours on the picket line.

NDP to fight back-to-work legislation

Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles walked our picket line today to support workers. The leader said that if the federal government brings legislation to force workers back to work, her federal colleagues with Canada's NDP and their leader Jagmeet Singh, who has a confidence-and-supply agreement with the Government of Canada, will fight this legislation every step of the way.

We call on all parliamentarians to fight for workers.

Make the picket line fun

We are asking members to bring any instruments they may have at home to keep the picket line lively and energized. Members can also wear costumes, bring portable speakers, sing, dance etc. Numbers matter so bring out the family, friends and neighbours. The bigger the impact we can make across the country, the faster we will get a deal.

Enquiries

Our local team is on the picket line all day and would not be able to answer calls during this time. Please continue to submit tickets and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We are continuing to work respond to tickets in the evening.

In solidarity,

UTE Local 00048
